A while ago, I took the train from Dun Laoghaire into Dublin. At Pearse Station, where I had never alighted before, on my way to the exit, an old advertisement caught my eye and I stopped to take a look at it. This was partly due to the ad's strange setting. It was off to one side of the walkway down from the platforms, behind railings in one of those pockets of fenced-off, disused and messy looking space that can form over time as large buildings are modified and extended. A big wooden frame, many decades old, was recessed into the brick wall. This structure was clearly no longer used for contemporary advertising, but amazingly it still had an old, abandoned ad in it- a poster with torn and peeling edges. The image was purely typographic, in red on a dirty white background, and it simply said, 'Cadbury' s Chocolate ... Delicious Wholesome ... Always ask for Cadbury's'. This legend was enclosed by a heavy black rule. I couldn't date the poster with any accuracy, though it was probably from the 1920s or earlier. The 'Delicious Wholesome' part was picked out in a slightly crude script and there were some pleasing oddities of sizing and placement.
