It's a privilege to be bringing together these new and collected essays and to note the wide range of contributors, from peers of Denis Williams's own generation to present-day scholars. The breadth of this interest recognizes Williams's influence and the plurality of contexts of his activity as a painter, writer, art theorist, and archaeologist.
In a career spanning some fifty years, three continents, and a number of related academic and artistic trajectories, Williams has without doubt made a substantial contribution, and in several respects his work
has been ground breaking. Yet, surprisingly, while his contributions in particular fields have been acknowledged, his work as a whole has not to date been comprehensively documented and the interconnections have been
insufficiently rehearsed. Some ten years after his death we have seized the opportunity to capture the ground and provide a baseline in this text for critical review and to stimulate further scholarly exploration.
