The sound dimension as a tool to better understand the Alpine specificities is the common thread of this work. The transversality of the approaches presented here invites us to use the sensitive as a tool for deep understanding of the territory and its sustainability. The contributions question three main aspects: the sound representations of a place, the Alps, where the contrast between the construction of its imagination and its development at the pace of modernity is obvious; the sounds which mark the rhythms and practices of the inhabitants of the Alps as well as their apprehension; the evolution of sensitivities and the relationship to a changing sound environment.
Interest in sound and its social and cultural issues became a real phenomenon in the latter part of the 20th century and led to interdisciplinary reflections taking into account aspects of temporality, as well as the articulations between techniques and sensitivities. However, apart from approaches clearly borrowed from sound ecology, the majority of studies on the sound environment in social sciences are not interested in mountains, particularly in the Alpine region. This work is a first attempt to approach the apprehension of the Alpine territory through listening.
