This widespread use of chlorophenols has resulted in their presence as contaminants in many environments. The aim of the study was to assess the potential of peroxidases from a lignocellulose-degrading actinobacteria, Streptomyces allms for the degradation of chlorinated phenols. Extracellular peroxidases activity, together with endoxylanase activity were detected during the growth of S. a/bus. with maximum extracellular peroxidase activity (using 2,4-dichlorophenol as substrate) recorded after 96 h (0.34 U ml'1 ). To assess the biotechnological potential of the extracellular peroxidase activity, enzyme activity was assessed using a range of chlorinated subSLrates: 4-chlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and penwchlorophenol. Activity against all four substrates was detected, with activities of 0.30. 0.43, 0.43 and 0. 18 U ml'1 respectively. The results suggest a biotechnological role for the peroxidase from S. a/bus in the degradation of chlorinated compounds.
