This chapter provides an overview of how the Caribbean can leverage real-time big data sources and appropriate analytical techniques. This is done through three case studies to assess the efficacy of Shelter in Place Order (SIPO) policies in Trinidad and Tobago using Facebook Data for Good; to gauge the mental health and coping strategies in Caribbean countries during COVID-19 using Google Community reports; and to assess the impact of COVID-19 on stock market returns. We highlight the strengths and limitations of the data and the empirical methods which can be used to strengthen the accuracy of estimates as well as test the robustness of the results. The chapter concludes by drawing lessons learnt to demonstrate that once correctly sourced and applied, near real-time data can be a viable alternative, and in some instances can be combined with official data to support decision-making and policy development in the Caribbean. Ultimately near real-time data can be particularly useful not only during COVID-19 but during other crises and natural disasters that occur in the region such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions.
