Industrial exhibitions in New Zealand comprised periodic audits of developing material and human resources, which enabled national scenario building exercises. Between 1865 and 1925, the exhibitions demonstrate a shifting emphasis from extractive industries and industrial production to promotion of the country as a tourist and migrant destination. The three exhibitions Dunedin hosted provided enduring, tangible and productive contributions to the urban environment of the city, ranging from health and cultural infrastructure to land for industrial and sporting development.
