As part of the global trend towards sustainable development many industries are adopting "green" design practices in order to improve their products from the perspective of the "triple bottom line". This paper discusses the design for environment approach to sports products design and presents a case study of composite tennis racquets with life cycle assessment (LCA) used to evaluate their environmental load and design features. The flexibility of the LCA approach is examined and LCA variations are suggested that may be applicable for specific situations. Furthermore, this work identifies the importance of uncertainty management within LCA and presents preliminary findings that suggest how uncertainty management can enhance the value ofLCA to the design engineer.
