It is often understood that graphic design, like other kinds of design, is concerned with problem solving. In this essay, Brad Haylock argues that problem formulation, aka problem definition, is a vitally important part of the design process, but one that has been historically under-recognised in graphic design education and practice. Here, he discusses ways in which graphic designers might become more sensitive to complexity, and, drawing from service design, strategic planning, entrepreneurship and innovation management, he considers a range of tools and methods that designers might employ to tackle the knotty task of problem formulation.
