This paper aims to explore a select set of interrelated notions central to any investigation of knowledge claims made within the medium of design and creative practice. It provides a revisionist interpretation of the relationship betlJ;een epistemic claims associated with orthodox discursive 'cognitive practice' 011 one side and e:;...pressivi'st claims manifest in design and creative practice on the other. The notions at stake refer to questions about potential cognitive expression, categorisation and conceptttalisation in design and pivot arottnd the central concepts of reflection and singttlarity, not least because ideas of oijectivi(JI and tramferability in creative practice i·esearch have decidedb cognitive import when reflection is understood as necessitati1tg concepts.
