Ultra-violet initiated polymerisation has been used to form acrylic pressure sensitive adhesives directly on to backing material. The adhesives are best prepared under a transparent polyethylene film which prevents oxygen inhibition. The polyethylene film then protects the tacky adhesive and can be peeled off prior to application of the adhesive to a substrate. Adhesion peel tests have shown that adhesives thus prepared are suitable for applications when optimum amounts of a cross-linking monomer and a polar monomer are present.
