Turkish Cypriots in Australia: The evolution of a multi-hyphenated community and the impact of transnational events

chapter
posted on 2024-10-30, 21:22 authored by Desmond CahillDesmond Cahill
This chapter examines the settlement and evolution of the Turkish Cypriot community since the first arrivals in September 1947 based on historical research and census data since the 1950s. The article traces the evolution from the perspective of their fourfold identity (as Cypriots, as Turkish, as Muslin, as Australian), tracing how it has evolved in the context of the Cyprus civil war situation during the 1950s - 1970s, the arrival of the Turkish community from 1967 onwards, the formation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and, more recently, the emergence of Islamophobia within an understanding of acculturation.
