BACKGROUND
A Maelstrom Practice was included in the catalogue documenting "Drawing Is/Not Building", an exhibition of works by architectural practitioners Roland Snooks, Sarah Treadwell and Simon Twose curated by Twose & Treadwell. The exhibition investigated in detail through design research the status of drawing across the three distinct architectural practices. Spooner was one of 17 international practitioneers to provide a written work and drawing to be included in the exhibition catalogue as part of a wider survey of the role of drawing in contemporary architectural practice.
CONTRIBUTION
A Maelstrom Practice discussed a drawing produced by student of architecture Jan See Oi in the architectural design studios led by Spooner at RMIT. The text was an account of the strategies at work in the design studio that led to the production of a particular type of drawing that braided the cartographic techniques of a Panneau and a Periplus together. Indoing so it positioned an innovative pedagogical model that enabled students to ecplise cliched drawing outcomes.
SIGNIFIGANCE
Maelstrom Practice was included alongside works by emminent national and international scholars, practitioners and researchers of drawing including Leon van Schaik, Ross Jenner, Helene Frichot, Teresa Stoppani and Neil Spiller. As an emerging researcher the selection of Spooner alongside these established practitioners evidences the significant value placed on his teaching and research practice.
