BACKGROUND This project, an invited editorial position by Anna Johnson and Richard Black for the summer issue of the AIA Victorian Chapter journal AV, brings together critical explorations of contemporary responses to landscape through an introductory essay, interview piece with renowned Australian artist John Wolseley - authored by Black and Johnson (1800 words each) and an additional 8 contributors selected by Black and Johnson, each submitting a project accompanied by drawings, images and 1500 - 2000 word essay. All exemplar architectural practitioners or scholars, these contributors were: - Kerstin Thompson. - Room 11 - Baracco Wright Architects - Peter Corrigan - Make Architecture - Vokes & Peters - Assoc. Prof Conrad Hamann - Simon Whibley. CONTRIBUTION This AV issue forms part of a longer-term research that critically re-assesses architecture's relationship to landscape in Australia that extends material published internationally in Black and Johnson's book Living in the Landscape (published by Thames and 2016). Broadly, this project situates contemporary architectural and artistic responses to landscape culturally, environmentally and qualitatively and forges new territory with indigenous histories and occupation of place. SIGNIFICANCE With a print run of 4000 and sent to 3800 AIA members, the impact of this journal is substantial in disseminating to the architectural profession the curated work of award winning practitioners, an internationally recognised artist all working critically with landscape. The content for this journal is unprecedented within Australia and disseminates select essays and projects revealing contemporary attitudes to the Australian landscape - culturally, environmentally and politically.
