Background 'The Collective Network City Model' is an essay by Roger Kemp, Raphael Kilpatrick and Anthony Fryatt, published in Interior Educators (IE), Issue 2, April 2018. This edition, 'Making', aims to celebrate Making as a rich thread that runs through the design process. In this work, Kemp, Kilpatrick and Fryatt contribute to an ongoing discussion around methods and techniques for design education, with specific focus on the role of making as both a research and learning activity. Contribution In this article, a framework for practice is demonstrated through the speculative work of students that emerged in response to the 'Collective Network City Model' project proposition. This bridging project formed a site of interrogation, negotiation and exchange for a group of 20 undergraduate design students. Through this work, making activities (specifically model making) are positioned as a social learning activity understood as a soft skill rather than the perceived hard skill learning. The articulation of these creative practice research outcomes forms part of the researchers' ongoing enquiry regarding the acquisition of knowledge through making (Downton 2003), and the performative aspects of the architectural model (Brejzek and Wallen 2017). Significance IE: Studios is a new online journal from the United Kingdom focusing on pedagogy in interior design education and is currently in its second edition. The editorial panel for the journal comprises of leading academics from the UK and Australia. The journal reaches out to a network of over fifty-member interior design programs from universities across the UK. The journal provides an outlet for academics to discuss specific teaching and learning approaches for interior design education.
