This article reviews the different types of concrete sealants used in the construction industry against the corrosion of reinforcement bars in concrete due to ingress of chloride and other contaminants to improve the durability of concrete structures. The main part of the article focuses on the results in published work which analysed the application of different types of sealants, mainly identified as silane, siloxane, hydrogels and silicate based products. Comparison of each type of sealants with regards to its composition, functioning process, penetration depths, effects on physical properties and microstructure are further discussed.
