This work in progress research studies the intention of residential energy users to adopt a Residential Energy Management Information System (REMIS) for better energy management. Microsoft and Google rolled out their cloud based REMIS only to withdraw them within two years with market acceptance cited as a main reason. Most studies on residential energy use focus on energy behavior and economic aspects of residential energy use while related IS studies focusses on specific technologies, ignoring the adoption of such an IS. REMIS is not widely adopted; hence measuring adoption would not be easy. However, with the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) a behavior (such as adoption of REMIS) can be predicted by studying intentions to perform it. We hence developed a conceptual model of intention to adopt REMIS based on TPB. A two phase study consisting of pilot and primary study is planned for to validate this model.
