Agile software development methodologies are new ways of managing software development, a new answer to the problems inherent in developing software. They attempt to eliminate scope risk by breaking projects down into short cycles, known as iterations. These methodologies give the promise of rapidly delivering value to customers and completing quicker than more traditional, plan-driven planning-based methodologies. Being iterative in nature, they represent a complete change to earlier development methods: there is no work breakdown structure, no Gantt chart, no change control process and potentially little documentation. For this reason Agile software development methodologies are very popular with some sections of the software development community who see themselves freed from the drudgery of process to focus purely on coding.
