The accuracy, reliability and availability of continuous real-time positions are critical for pedestrian navigation services (PNS). Low-cost portable devices that could provide ubiquitous positioning services are required to facilitate PNS. Recent research suggests that tags in Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) systems can meet the needs of PNS using location fingerprinting algorithms. However, it is limited by the large amount of work required to establish a fine received signal strength (RSS) distribution pattern in a large area in the training phase and the variations of RSS in dynamic environments of the positioning phase.
