Biodegradable Organic Salts for Reactive Dyeing of Cotton

conference contribution
posted on 2024-10-31, 10:42 authored by Awais Khatri, Rajiv PadhyeRajiv Padhye, Maxwell White, Keith Cowlishaw
Reactive dyeing of cotton textiles requires considerable quantities of inorganic salt and alkali for efficient application of dyes. These salts and alkalis when discharged to effluent it generates high levels of total dissolved solids (TDS) leading to environmental pollution. A number of improved environmental approaches have been studied to reduce this problem. These may be classified as (A) modification of dyeing processes and machinery, (B) development of better dye structures and blends, (C) modification of fibre-polymer polarity, (D) use of organic salts in place of inorganic salt and alkali.
