Characteristic modelling is a simplified yet efficient engineering-oriented modelling approach. A high-order nonlinear (or linear) system can be approximated by a low-order discrete time-varying system. In this paper, a new kind of sliding-mode control is proposed based on the characteristic modelling approach. It has been shown that characteristic modelling approach, as a data-based technology, is suitable for control design. With the proposed control strategy implemented, the convergence speed and the robustness of the system are improved. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods are verified via numeral simulation studies.
