This paper considers the localization of an emitter based on the direct position determination (DPD) method, wherein the transmitted signal is unknown for receivers. To improve the localization accuracy, a new algorithm is designed here to jointly estimate the emitter position and the unknown signal waveform. This approach exploits as much waveform information as possible of the transmitted signal with no need for any prior knowledge. Simulation results show that the localization performance of the proposed method is much better than the existing DPD algorithms which do not estimate the transmitted signal.
