Generalists, music specialists and teaching for creativity in Victorian state primary schools

Music has a wealth of creativity experiences awaiting children's exploration, dependent of course, on the teaching approaches selected by educators. This paper is about an investigation into teaching for creativity, by generalists and music specialists, in Victorian state primary schools. The investigation into the 'best of both worlds' is part of a study to identify and synthesise teacher know-how in teaching for creativity. Using a mixed methods research design, including critical dialogues with both generalist and music specialists to capture the voice of teacher practice, a guiding framework for deepening music education teaching practices is to be developed. Through connecting teaching for creativity approaches across learning areas and in music education, the emerging framework aims to be user-friendly and representative of current teacher practice, for primary school educators, regardless of their prior training or lack thereof, in music education.
