Social networking sites (SNS) are widely adopted as a communication tool by people of all ages around the world. There are different types of SNS developed for a different purpose, and the types of information shared on SNS have user benefits as well as costs. This is a research in progress paper on benefits and costs of information on social networking sites. It includes a review of literature on the status of social networking, types of social networking sites, and types of information on these different sites. It then includes a number of hypotheses derived from the literature analysis, a research model and a description of the research methods that will be used to accomplish this proposed research.
