Partial discharge (PD) is one of the main causes of failures in electrical insulation systems. PD signals are made up of signals of various frequency components, including frequency components in the GHz region. The PD signals caused by electrical insulation failures could couple onto the overhead conductor and radiate when they travel along the line. When the PD signals travel for a few wavelengths, the cable starts to act like an antenna and begins to show travelling wave radiation patterns. This paper discusses about the characteristics and radiation patterns of these travelling waves. In this study, CST Microwave Studio is used to simulate the high frequency PD propagation.
