Perceptual coding of digital colour images based on a vision model

conference contribution
posted on 2024-10-31, 16:02 authored by C Tan, Damian Tan, Hong Wu
This paper presents a perceptual coder for Y-Cr-Cb (YUV) colour spaces. The approach extends from the single colour channel model of [1], [2] and the ROB colour domain model of [3] that mimics the human visual system (HVS) in exploiting its intra-band and inter-orientational masking properties. Although the proposed perceptual coder retains most of the Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation (EBCOT) coding features in [4] and is fully bit-stream compliant with JPEG2000 standard [5], the simulation results have revealed comparable or better visual performance over both the MSE and visual masking of JPEG2000 Verification Model 8.0 coder.
