Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are increasingly being adopted in pervasive computing environments as an important component for gathering environmental context. The resource-scarceness of WSNs raises the requirement to efficiently manage the energy consumed by the sensor for prolonged operation. In this paper, we propose a situation-aware adaptation approach for energy conservation in WSNs. Our proposed approach leverages on the knowledge (context) obtained from the data collected within the WSN to dynamically control the sensor's duty cycle in an energy efficient manner. This approach provides the sensor with the intelligence to adapt itself from being very active to less active based on environmental/contextual changes. Our proposed approach has the capability to detect infinitesimal changes in the sensor's environment and adapt the sensor's operations according to evolving situations. We have implemented SA-A-WSN on Sun SPOT sensors and evaluated the system for real-world scenarios. Experimental results validating the energy efficiency of the proposed SA-A-WSN's conclude the paper.
