This paper presents a proposition for thinking about and for challenging the basic premise, that the role of cartographic devices such as maps or atlases is to enable us to be placed. Conceived of as the Art of Being Lost, the proposition explores different ways for conceptualising and structuring the experience of being lost. From artistic interventions that explore the nature of place and region, where play and confusion challege the users sense of location, to the mythological origins of the labyrinth and the experience of the labyrinthine, the following discussion takes on a journey to rethink the Art of Mapping, and the potential of being lost.
