A novel technique for visually lossless medical image compression is presented Visually lossless compression is defined as removing visually insignificant information without evoking any degradation in image quality, through the suppression of visual distortions. An advanced perceptual distortion metric is adapted into the JPEG 2000 coding framework, whilst maintaining bit-stream compliance. Current simulation results have shown superior compression gains over that of the state of the art JPEG-LS and JPEG 2000 Lossless coders, without any visible distortions.
