RESEARH BACKGROUND: 'Give it up for Margaret!' was a month-long events program that celebrated the philanthropic efforts of Margaret Lawrence. The project was initiated by Jan Cochrane-Harry, the executor of Margaret Lawrence's estate. Lawrence was one of the first private philanthropists to set up a 'living bequest' in Australia, which continues to support projects for the advancement of women, education and the arts. Under the direction of two Directors, Bec Reid and Tristan Meecham, Murray was invited to curate the program, which incorporated a diverse program of events related to philanthropy, including exhibitions, workshops, public forums, presentations by international specialists, and public conversations, to highlight the shifts in contemporary arts philanthropy. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: Murray played a critical role in presenting this project. She curated and delivered the public forums: 'Free Form or Fine Form: Australian Ceramics Then and Now'; 'Art & Money'; and 'The Art of Giving'. She undertook extensive research into Australian arts philanthropy, and developed a series of 'action research' evenings that brought together stakeholders engaged in arts and philanthropy to generate new ideas in this area. She also worked with Melbourne Business School to bring out Ben Cameron (US), a specialist on arts innovation and philanthropy, for a public forum and masterclass. Additionally, she was responsible for writing all the texts (including ghost writing for others). This project is part of Murray's ongoing curatorial practice, and demonstrates her vital role in stimulating local and national art communities, connecting artists, galleries, government bodies, philanthropists and curators. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The extensive program of events inspired broader debates and activities around innovative philanthropy, particularly within the art sector. It received extensive media reviews in The Age, The Melbourne Newsroom and Generosity Magazine.
