BACKGROUND: The exhibition In Between for the Australian pavilion studies architecture's capacity to strengthen cultural connections and understanding between non-Indigenous and First Nations peoples. In Between presents a collection of architectural projects and processes selected for their powerful representation of Indigenous and First Nations peoples and cultures; projects that enable cross cultural exchange and highlight the value of Indigenous knowledges for improving the built environment. The research explores different approaches, across a variety of architectural typologies and scales, working to shared agendas and a consistency of thinking demonstrating a level of cultural maturity within the built environment disciplines where cultural collaboration and exchange are possible. CONTRIBUTION: Due to the pandemic, In Between was devised as physical immersive exhibit and an online portal (which required new technologies). It encourages discourses of the shared challenges faced across Oceania demonstrating the methods that ways to connections with Indigenous cultures and knowledges have the capacity to transform architecture. Showcasing projects from remote, regional, and metropolitan locations, every drawing, photograph or snippet of footage collated in the film offers insight into how architects are creating new protocols for better design outcomes through meaningful co-design processes, and that architects understand the value of engaging with deeper connections to Country. SIGNIFICANCE: Venice Biennale of Architecture - also known as Mostra di Architettura di Venezia– is an international exhibition. The agenda of the Architecture Biennale is to propose and showcase architectural solutions to contemporary societal, humanistic, and technological issues. It is described as the “biggest show in the world for architecture.” IN BETWEEN was only the second exhibition focused on Indigenous works included in the La Biennale di Venezia since its inception.
