This project was developed as part of an ongoing research relationship between RMIT Art in Public Space with the Sile Municipal Government, Istanbul, Turkey. Geoff Hogg has worked with Sile Government since 1998. The project was developed jointly with Sile Municipality to create a Public Art event incorporating 17 installations on and around a large Bosphorus ferry moored in Sile harbour. The Bosphorus ferry is a key symbol of Istanbul. Significance This continuing international Art in Public Space research project is the only one of its type in Turkey contributing to an established research relationship. The project was jointly opened by the Governor of Sile Region and the Mayor of the Municipality, demonstrating both local and national government support. This project has created new knowledge in the area of intercultural practice. The curators facilitated opportunities for artists to work closely with community members and build on 14 years of trust and cooperation to achieve high levels of participation and engagement. This made it possible to explore the key project theme 'Common Experiences of the Sea, Work and Migration' as meeting points in cultural connection. This is particularly notable in light of the fact that Sile is a major fishing port on the Black Sea and has been a centre of trade from ancient times. Sile beach is mentioned in the ancient story of Jason and the Argonauts and retained a Greek population until the 1920s 'population exchange'.
