I examine an ordinary residential street in the suburb of Moorabbin, in the south-east corridor of Melbourne. Moorabbin is located 15 km from the Melbourne CBD and about three kilometers from the coast of Port Phillip Bay, sitting on about four and a half square kilometers. In the post-war years the area experienced a massive growth during which new families settled into new detached houses. Until recently the major form of the housing in the suburb was a stand-alone house but planning policies promoting densification have encouraged the replacement of older detached houses with townhouses and multiple units on the large blocks. Contemporary Moorabbin is diverse like many Melbourne suburbs. In 2016, 5,895 people lived there, with 40.1% born in another country. Top countries of birth (after Australia) were China (4.1%), India (3.7%), England (2.8%) and Greece (2.1%).
