We describe the design, synthesis and characterisation of an optical and colorimetric sensor based on aza-crown ether-substituted naphthalene diimide (NDI), which demonstrates a remarkable selectivity and optical response toward calcium (Ca2+) over other cations (Mn2+, Ba2+, Ni2+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, Fe2+, and Cu2+). The key to the development of this sensor is the identification of a chemically very stable, crown-ether containing, calcium selective ionophore, coupled with an NDI fluorophore having the correct spectral and turn-on fluorescence. The UV-vis absorption, fluorescence, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and naked eye-detection clearly support selective binding of the Ca2+ ion.
