This paper describes a local deformation model for reinforced concrete flexural members. The model predicts the progressive formation and development of flexural cracks and the local strains in the tensile reinforcement at and between the cracks, as well as the slip between the tensile reinforcement and the surrounding concrete. The deformation model has been used to develop computer programs to predict local deformations and overall behaviour in determinate and indeterminate beams. Good agreement is obtained in comparisons of predictions with test data. The analysis programs can be used to investigate moment redistribution, plastic rotation, rotation capacity, and mode of failure (whether by steel fracture or concrete softening) in indeterminate reinforced members.
