This paper describes a music program introduced into a childcare setting by an external researcher. The program was designed to introduce the children to musical concepts like beat, rhythm, tempo, timbre and dynamics in both formal and play-based contexts. An underlying theme was the exploration of cultural diversity through music. Participants in the research were the staff at the centre, parents and the children. The children's experiences were recorded through naturalistic observations, including photographs and were analysed as 'learning stories' so the children's own responses were the focus of the exercise. An example of one child's experience is presented here.
