This paper considers issues of methodology in historical and other humanities and social science disciplines, and the challenges of establishing frameworks for how we manage large, complex research projects. The paper outlines an oceanic approach to research, developed using conceptual and theoretical literature relating to the role of sports in human-ocean health and wellbeing. The paper concludes with reflections on the importance of sport history to increased focus on environmental politics and change.
