Partitioning: the missing link in building fraction knowledge and confidence

The author asserts that developing an understanding of fractions is a core component of what it means to be numerate. A number of ideas for maths class activities which focus on fractions for students in the middle years are described. Findings from the Middle Years Numeracy Research Project conducted in Victoria from November 1999 to November 2000 are discussed.
