The preparation and characterization of manganese(III) complexes containing the quadridenate ligand, NN'-bis(aminobenzylidene)1,2-ethanediamine (H(2)amben), and its previously unreported analogue, NN'-bis(2-amino-5-nitro-benzylidene)-1,2-ethanediamine (H(2)nitroamben), are described. The new manganese(III) halide/pseudohalide complexes, Mn(amben)X (.) nH(2)O and Mn(nitroamben)X (.) nH(2)O (X = Cl, Br, I, NCS; n = 0.5 or 1), were isolated as red-brown, microcrystalline solids, which were characterized fully.
