R V Wunungmurra: Culture as usual in the courts

journal contribution
posted on 2024-11-01, 06:57 authored by Adrian Howe
The 'R v Wunungmurra' case is discussed in which Dennis Wunungmurra, a Yolngu man, was accused of stabbing his wife Wendy Manamawuy Garrawarra to death. Defence lawyer Rex Wild QC mounted a cultural defence, arguing that it was Wunungmurra's 'cultural duty' to assault his 'errant' wife. The article discusses the use of 'cultural' evidence in Australian courts to defend men who fatally assault the women in their communities.
