Woodward and Hoffman suggested that pericyclic reactions under thermal or photochemical conditions are governed by the symmetry of the molecular orbitals of the reactants and products. Nature uses pericyclic pathways to synthesize the endiandric acids. The symmetry rules are now surrounded by controversy due to recent claims by Professor E. J. Corey.
