The formulation of OR problems: a critical craft

journal contribution

In this paper, the problem of correct formulation of mathematical models for real world situations is considered. The issue is not so much that the correct formulation is required, as this is usually quite easily arrived at. The issue is more that the appropriate formulation is arrived at. Ulis is an issue that is not dealt with in much detail in undergraduate or graduate courses, and one that practitioners often need reminders about. An example is given, where the cost of not arriving at the most appropriate model is substantial. Conversely, the rewards for arriving at the appropriate formulation are also substantial.
