The old supreme court of Victoria buildings: Everything old is new again

journal contribution
posted on 2024-11-01, 08:13 authored by Susan Reynolds
After the opening of new law courts in William Street, Melbourne, in 1884, the buildings formerly used by the Supreme Court of Victoria at the corner of La Trobe and Russell Streets were demolished. The various buildings on this site were constructed at different times and designated 'old' or 'new' depending on when their construction occured in relation to each other. This has led to confusion over which building is actually being referred to in the literature about them. This article aims to set the record straight by clarifying what was old and what was new at specific times in the history of the first Supreme Court buildings.
