UnAustralian? Commonwealth policy and refugees on temporary protection visas

One of the apparent aims behind the Commonwealth government's attempts to prevent 'unauthorised arrivals' from making a claim for Australian protection has been to protect the social cohesion of the Australian nationstate. Social cohesion in this context has been based on understandings of 'belonging' and 'shored values and norms' that are increasingly tied to citizenship. Political rhetoric has suggested that unauthorised arrivals are 0 threat to social cohesion because they lock the same values and norms as Australians. As a result, the Commonwealth government has extended mandatory detention and implemented 'border protection' policies, with unauthorised arrivals at best offered only temporary protection as non-citizens.
