Background
‘Hem 243 Series Sectional Walk Parts 1 and 2’ is part of an archive of films that record wards 14 and 15 in District 4, HCMC, Vietnam. The film uses the embodied experience of the filmmaker as the narrative. This explores the possibility of moving image representation of place as a sensory focused experience, as an alternative to a formal documentation of built form. The research through my film practice offers a generative approach to filmmaking. In this sense it responds to the work of filmmaker Daniel Crooks. It is also informed from the work of Stan Brakhage, in particular ‘Unconscious London Strata’, through his ‘felt’ experience of the city. This film is developed around the following research question: In what ways can movement through an urban space and a post-production process reveal a sensory reconstitution of embodied experience, through film?
Contribution
This film records a specific set of spaces that lack detailed observation and understanding of its cultural value. The film contributes to a set of films that explore and experiment with a sensory experience of the built environments studied. The visually complex properties of film subtly reveal form and flow as components of the space that inform an experience. This leads the re-presentation of an original experience into a film based one, that triggers new experiences with the audience. The audio for the film is created from the original film sequence.
