RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Featuring more than 140 garments, the NGV'S HOUSE OF DIOR: SEVENTY YEATS OF HAUTE COUTURE exhibition narrated the rich history of the fashion house including Christian Dior's early influences, the design codes synonymous with the House of Dior, insights into the Dior ateliers and design processes, and the reinterpretation of the Dior repertoire by the six successive designers following Christian Dior. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: My contribution was as researcher and scriptwriter developing a 12,000-word manuscript for the podcast accompanying the exhibition. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: The research scope was vast: the script covered seventy years of the house of Dior, beginning with the visionary work of Christian Dior himself, and continuing to explore the work of the six subsequent designers, including luminaries such as Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano. The script required familiarity with design histories and historical contexts, as well as extensive archival research to find quotations to bring the voice of each designer to life. The 70-minute podcast drew together techniques and approaches from art history and criticism, documentary filmmaking, scriptwriting, radio and podcast production. The content was peer-reviewed by Helene Starman, curator of the Dior Archive in France, and the NGV's Fashion & Textiles curators. The script was narrated by Australian actor Therese Palmer and produced by a team of NGV and external creatives. The creative work had an audience of 23,568 through iPod touch devices (hired onsite) plus downloads from the House of Dior microsite (uncounted), which will remain as a future archive of the project.
