RESEARCH BACKGROUND: The creative work 'Lattice' is an immersive, animated laser display created by Mindbuffer, an artistic collaboration between Josh Batty and Mitchell Nordine. 'Lattice' was one of 11 works created for the LightTime exhibition at Scienceworks Museum which was open for the public from July 2017 until April 2018. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: 'Lattice' is a 5-channel audio-visual laser installation driven by custom generative music software that creates uniquely unfolding patterns. The lasers project these patterns through 10 layers of transparent gauze suspended above the audience. This creates the illusion of floating holographic visuals combining into lattice like structures unique to the viewers' location in space. The work was generated in the space with no repetition or recording, so an original piece of music and light display was created every day. The work explores the phenomena of light, optics, sound, movement and perspective, contributing to Scienceworks' vision to reveal the intricacies of aesthetic perception by showing the connections between the experience and the science that enables it. This project contributes to Batty's ongoing research exploring the intersection between audio-visual art, computer science and musical performance. REEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: Mindbuffer was one of eleven experimental artists invited to create immersive experiences of otherworldly aesthetic and optical illusions for LightTime, which reflects the Museum's ambition to connect with a new audience inspired by the connection between art and science. Scienceworks is a significant cultural institution that is part of Museums Victoria. Lattice and the broader LightTime program received attention in local media.
