Background Traditionally aesthetics have been associated with the arts and a notion of beauty and/or the sublime, while more contemporary approaches in the arts have contested such notions. Following the public debates about the Anthropocene and associated ecological problems, such as global warming and man-made climate change theorists like Latour's call for a "post-global aesthetics" in order to revise how we picture our planet. Contribution In response to the way the global environmental discussion relies predominately on visual metaphors, my sound work "planet ocean" is a sensory enquiry into the multi-sensory modality of our thinking. planet ocean is a sound collage of underwater recordings of the ocean and voice excerpts from Graham Hawkes, a former civilian ocean engineer who has devoted most of the past three decades to building a submarine capable of cruising the deepest reaches of the ocean. By shifting from a visual to sound as the main sensory mode including acoustic space perception planet ocean is a playful contemplation on the fact that water makes up about 71% of the Earth's surface - but still we call this planet Earth. Significance In 2014 planet ocean was selected for the Saout Radio project, curated by Younes Baba-Ali & Anna Raimondo for Marrakech Biennal 5 (MA) - a major contemporary art event in Africa. Prior to that it was on display at the Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo, which attracted over 400 visitors. In 2018 it was included in Anna Raimondo's podcast Radio Creatures. In 2019 it was exhibited as part of the group show at Powercut #8 in Bangalore, India.
