Anna Karenina - Directed by Greg Carroll

Anna Karenina was a stage production of Tolstoy's novel of the same name presented at the Stork Theatre. The production tells the story of the aristocrat Anna Karenina and her affair with the cavalry officer Count Vronsky, her isolation by her social peers on escaping with Vronsky, and finally her suicide due to her paranoia of Vronsky fidelity to her. The Stork Theatre is a highly regarded independent theatre in Melbourne. It has a longstanding commitment to innovative translations and new productions which have contributed to awareness of the local theatre scene. The value of this project is further evidenced by the review of the stage production in the Saturday Age - Woodhead, C, `Anna Karenina', Saturday Age, 28 May, p. 24 (Anna Karenina). A white set washed in different colours throughout the performance, offset the two chairs tied back to back with a Gordian knot. Corrigan's set and costumes for Anna Karenina thus demonstrate the dramatic presence of a sparse set and almost singular prop. The performance distinguished itself by increasing an awareness of the role theatre can play in contemporary society.
