BACKGROUND: The project 'Cellular' is an algorithmic design project by Alisa Andrasek. It was developed for robotic fabrication by Noumea (Barcelona), and the 3D-printed model was subsequently exhibited by Noumea / Wasp Hub in 2018, at the Italian Pavilion-Fira Barcelona. At the event, Andrasek's project was used to showcase the Delta Wasp 3D printing machines performing digitally-designed objects being 3D-printed using Extrudr filaments and Ceramica Collet clay paste. Andrasek was the designer and researcher for the project, with the code written by Leonidas Leonidou. CONTRIBUTION: For the Cellular project, custom written software was developed based on Cellular Division algorithm. Andrasek also developed the design specifically for robotic 3D printing in clay and plastic. Clay had very specific restrictions in terms of cantilevering, requiring the section of the object to be programmed through constrained gradual angles. Since the object to be designed was a table, part of design intent was to densify some areas of the table in order to allow for its functional use (objects can be placed on the table), while keeping some "wrinkles" larger (lower in resolution) in order to lighten the weight of the table, save the material and speed up the printing process. The project demonstrates Andrasek's ongoing research in the generative potential of design systems in relation to the constraints of materials, structure, fabrication and assembly. SIGNIFICANCE: Cellular was selected by Noumena / Wasp Hub Barcelona for exhibition at Maker Faire Barcelona 2018 - the largest European event showcasing the integration of science, technology and creativity to create innovative ideas and entrepreneurial solutions for makers and designers. Noumena / WASP Hub is a Workspace equipped with cutting-edge machines designed by WASP to achieve big-scale digital manufacturing. Noumena is a world-leading specialist in construction, robotics, drones, virtual reality and hardware development.
