BACKGROUND: The Gusto Gelato kiosk by Iredale Pedersen Hook – where Martyn Hook is a Director – is a small architectural project on prime riverfront land in the Elizabeth Quay development of Perth CBD. Reflective during the day and colour-emitting at night, the chameleon-like kiosk reflects the surrounding environment during the day and becomes a small beacon of delight at night.
CONTRIBUTION: The form of the building is based on the colour and quality of the Argyle diamond which is unique to Western Australia. The architects worked with local Perth artist Pamela Gaunt to integrate the story of diamond processing of rough-cut and cut diamonds. The high performance glazing incorporates the Vanceva Colour System which uses interlayers to incorporate colour into laminated glass and glazing systems, and printed glass in toughened laminate across challenging geometry over almost the entire facade. It also has the flexibility to respond to changing weather patterns. Depth is created by the varying glass colours which also reflect the neon hues from the surrounding Elizabeth Quay precinct. This project demonstrates the architects’ commitment to produce works that are as individual as the landscape they occupy, and which embody unique design responses of innovation and delight.
SIGNIFICANCE: The project won the Commercial Architecture award at the 2017 Western Australian Architecture Awards by the Australian Institute of Architects. It was also the winner of the Glass & Windows Association of Western Australia - Bespoke Over $10K category - Award. It was also shortlisted for the Best Use of Colour at the World Architecture Festival, the world’s largest architectural awards program. It was also included in the list of ‘World’s Most Amazing Architecture’ in the Telegraph (UK) online news outlet.
